Caelan Cardello's "Chapter One" Drops Today Digitally, Vinyl Edition On the Way! (updated with link to JazzTimes story)

Caelan's first studio album with his working trio— 8 original tunes, two covers

Before you read Caelan's personal press release, check out this Jazz Times story (Caelan's personal press release): A quick story about the conception of this album - I was playing a trio show at Mezzrow jazz club in New York City one night in February of 2024, and was approached afterwards by Geoff Hoefer (producer on the album and owner of JazzBird Records). He expressed to me how moved he felt by my performance, and then said he wanted to be the one to produce my first record. At the time, I was fresh off of putting out the album Rufus Reid Presents: Caelan Cardello, yet the idea of putting out my own music seemed foreign and daunting. But what stuck out to me (and what sticks out to most musicians who perform live) is the fact that something in the performance that night moved Geoff to the point of offering me a deal on the spot. Ultimately, as a performer and artist, my job is to use my music to heal and inspire others, and thats exactly what I did for Geoff. And here we are, a year and half later.

I strongly feel that this album represents me and my artistry to the fullest, and showcases the beautiful, soulful, swingin’ and strong playing of Jonathon Muir Cotton and Domo Branch. I am grateful to my trio for their artistry and companionship throughout this whole process, and for their innate ability to take a piece of music and bring it to life. I would like to give a special shout out to Chris Lewis for coming in and playing (saxophone) beautifully on “John Neely”, “Don’t Look Back”, and “Solidarity”

I’d like to give another special shoutout to Geoff Hoefer for seeing my vision and helping bring all this to life. None of this would have been possible without him. Thanks to my good friend, colleague and mentor Isaiah Thompson for coming in and giving amazing feedback and helping guide the recording sessions. Another shoutout goes to Chris Sulit (Trading 8s studios) for being such an easy engineer to work with, Duke Marcos for mixing the album and Marc Urselli at Audio Confidential for mastering it.

As most of you know, the album is available on all streaming platforms and CD currently, but we are working on a vinyl as well, which is courtesy of Michael Fremer and Liam Records. The release date will be announced soon, and will feature a very special song that will be exclusive to the vinyl!

I am so appreciative to all of you who have already pre-saved and/or pre ordered the album. For those who haven’t here is a link to do so!

Liam Records Vinyl Release

Since the release of the now sold out (2000 copies) Rufus Reid Presents Caelan Cardello, I have seen Caelan perform numerous times: once at Dizzy's in support of the album with Rufus Reid, at Birdland, twice at Mezzrow (once with his trio and once recently with Rufus), and once with Rufus Reid at a church in Wayne, NJ. I missed a big band performance because I was out of town, but I heard it was dazzling).

This entire adventure, especially watching Caelan's artistry grow, has been and continues to be among the most exciting things i've ever experienced close up. The performances have been memorable—starting with the first one at the Klavierhaus piano showroom that Liam Records released.

I've been working with Caelan for the past few months helping to get this just released digital and CD edition sonically finalized and he's given me "Co-Producer" credit on the album—all formats.

Some of you recognize the names Duke Markos, who engineered and mixed Rufus Reid Presents Caelan Cardello and Marc Urselli who engineered, mixed and mastered all of the outstanding Newvelle Records releases (an ongoing project).

Here Duke mixed, and Marc mastered for the JazzBird Records CD and digital release, which Liam Records licensed for vinyl, cut using the 96/24 files. I received a few acetate references and decided the one that works best for the project is from "our own" Dave McNair, who's new "tricked out" cutting system (deserving of a feature story and there will be one) sounded best.

The vinyl edition of necessity has fewer songs so we could keep it down to around 20 minutes a side, but it will contain a track unique to the vinyl record, and the two covers—one by Cedar Walton and one by Cole Porter—on the CD are on the vinyl as well.

As I write this, we are finalizing the jacket art. The new logo was created by the talented Gregg Greenwood who took an iPhone photo and created the Rufus Reid Presents Caelan Cardello album cover. There's still a jacket production lag time so once we have jackets, Dave will cut lacquers, QRP will plate and press and Acoustic Sounds will distribute as it did last time.

Wow, this is lively played, great music and really good sound, very agile, very well defined bass lines, crisp sound, toe tapping pace, will also buy the vinyl. The hires files sound so good.

The vinyl edition features a solo cover of Monk's "Ask Me Now" though of timing necessity omits a few tunes so to get it all you need both the vinyl and stream or CD

Nice, would really be worth a 2LP release…how about it? If too little titles then, 2LP 45RPM ;-) This album rocks.

let's see how the first single LP batch sells, and if that does well, maybe there will be a complete 2LP remaster to take your money all over again!

      Hi Mike.

      Long time not talked to.

I just read some rumor today quoted by the owner of another long-establish audio journal re vinyl vs digital: Michael Fremer nowadays goes for digital music by digitizing whatever vinyl music he likes & listens its digital version instead of its original analogue form, being more convenient & musically & sonically no difference.

      Is this true ??

        lollll, you again.

i’ve no clue where you get your information from but michael often digitizes LPs and listens to those transfers on the go instead of listening to whatever officially released digital master. because a digital transfer of an excellent sounding LP is better than a potentially botched newer remaster on streaming/download platforms.

he does NOT, however, sit in his listening room listening to files he’s transferred from his own record collection. who the fuck would do that when they’re got the actual records there??? it’s not like records wear out the same way tapes can.

i’ll just say that a couple years ago, we digitized my vintage pressing of ‘histoire de melody nelson’, 192/24 through michael’s lynx hilo converter (one of the best). michael’s playback system is miles ahead of mine, but i’d still rather listen to the actual record on my system than the file of it made through his system. i do have the file on my phone for mobile listening, however, since it sounds way better than any digital transfer of that album.

          Hi

Thanks yr info although I expect Mike would reply to me himself instead of someone else who seems to know a lot about Mike's music listening habit.

Since the rumour came from the owner/CEO of a reputable US audiophile grade audio manufacturer & publisher of a long established on-line audio journal who claimed he is a "friend" of Mike in his daily YouTube show only a couple days ago.

Me too, I, a die-hard tube addict switched from decades' digital music to vinyl only some 8 years ago from scrap, placing my digital gear on the back burner. Yes . I still stream to update myself the current music world for convenience only. Vinyl musicality is for me.

Per your telling me (assuming true) Mike only listens to digital "on the go", my elder son who graduated from our City's Royal Conservatory of Music (founded 1881) on classical piano theory+practice with honour when he was only 18. He enjoys big time his music from his laptop & iPhone earbuds "on the go". Believe or not, he never owns any audio system at all !

well, i'm of course quite familiar with michael's listening habits as i've visited his listening room many times over the last seven years. in fact, i wrote my initial response to you on the train to visit him yesterday.

you should really cite your sources as to this 'owner/CEO of a reputable US audiophile grade audio manufacturer and publisher of a long established on-line audio journal' is. the tracking angle team really wants to know! because the guy must be spreading totally inaccurate information!

i've seen him listen to digital (hi-res files, SACDs, etc etc) though his dcs vivaldi one integrated transport/DAC. he can enjoy digital now that it's good, but he'd rather listen to vinyl. i have NEVER seen him listen to a digital transfer of his LP collection in his listening room when he's got the actual LP sitting there. i mean, he's probably listened to some of those files on the big system out of curiosity or a QC check, but at home, he's NOT listening to his own hi-res vinyl transfers over actual records. he HAS sent me many hi-res transfers of LPs through his system so i can hear what he's hearing, but those files are for external reference purposes, rather than being a definitive way to listen. sometimes his vinyl transfer files will be played at hifi shows, but he also lugs a massive bag of records with him all around the world.

and digitizing 15,000+ records is not at all 'more convenient' than listening to the actual records lol. that's a hilariously stupid idea. it's not like he has on-site assistants to do that for him. let's say he had 20,000 records and we digitized 10 a day, that'd still take five and a half years.

Well this is the impression Paul McGowan of PS Audio gave me from his daily YouTube show ":Ask Paul" topic: "Why vinyl feels emotional" dated September 10, 2025.

He always uses this site blog to promote his PS Audio digital products, undermining analogue gears which his company does not manufacture.

Check it out that blog & draw your comment on his using Fremer's analoge reputation by calling him "analogue guru of all times, Mr Vinyl Michael". who also routinely converts his vinyl records music to digital files & "enjoys all that wonderful emotional impact that you enjoy". Yet he did not mention the reason & purpose why M Fremer "routinely" does so. This is therefofe misleading !!
