Deutsche Grammophon's "Original Source" Series Discussion With Producer, Engineer, Execs and "The Tracking Angle Two"

Michael Fremer & Mark Ward join Series Producer Rainer Maillard, mastering engineer Sidney Meyer + others

Recently, Mark Ward and I joined "Original Source" producer Rainer Maillard, mastering engineer Sidney Meyer, DGG Heritage Director Johannes Gleim and Thomas Mowrey, former DGG producer and U.S. Marketing Director and "godfather" of the original quadrophonic recordings sourced for this series for a lively and very informative discussion about this exciting new project.

I bought most of them and agree about the achievement over the original vinyl for those who want to have them for the sake of those interpretations.

Where I don’t agree with Mark is, that in my opinion, due to the DG recording style and environment of this era, they still sound nowhere close to a good Decca, EMI or Mercury reissue (not to speak of those originals compared). But that’s no fault of this great reissue crew.

‘The Original Source Series - Expert Discussion’ or ‘The Education of Mr. Anthony?’ Either way, what an evening! I sat down to watch with my BIG Jamba Acai smoothie and realized the panel was equally delightful. Congrats to all the participants for a well presented discussion.

I’m especially cheering for Sidney, as her youth and experience will lend to a brighter tomorrow in the wonderful world of vinyl. Three weeks back, I succumbed to a “tube-rolling” itch I simply couldn’t overcome… and used the ‘Original Source Series’ funds to do it. Hope to secure a title or two this month if I’m lucky. Still, July brought me Hilary Hahn - ‘Six Sonatas for Violin Solo op.27.’

I purchased two of the three inaugural offerings. I have only had the chance to listen to one of them do to traveling, BRAHMS: Piano Concertos Nos. 1 & 2, I was very disappointed and distracted from the music by the vinyl quality. It has a lot of noise, almost like tape hiss but not, it comes and goes and then comes again. I have come to expect better from DG. I do need to give it another listen on my other turntable and make sure it is not on my end. I suspect not.

My memory may be incorrect on the one i listened two, (not the Beethoven 7) but i do remember it upsetting me that i had paid a pretty penny for the disappointment. I hope the Beethoven is not the same.

I had no noise problems so far with any of the releases. The Beethoven is the best sounding and maybe most essential of the ones so far in my opinion. This and the Gilles solo musically (as soon as it’s out) are the ones I’d recommend so far.

Crow is dish best washed down with humility (and beer). I checked my purchase receipt and the album i had issues with was not an original source release. It was a DG, Grieg: Peer Gynt Suiten 1 & 2 I apologize for my mistake.
