LOS ANGELES – Rhino High Fidelity (Rhino Hi-Fi) continues its premium audiophile series with a trio of celebrated albums from Dusty Springfield, Cher, and Joni Mitchell. The latest installment of the limited-edition vinyl reissue series features Dusty in Memphis, 3614 Jackson Highway, and Court and Spark.

Cut from the original master tapes by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180-gram black vinyl at Optimal in Germany, these releases feature glossy gatefold packaging with “tip-on” jackets and newly written liner notes. They are limited to 5,000 individually numbered copies and available today exclusively at Rhino.com and select Warner Music Group stores internationally.

Dusty in Memphis arrived in 1969 as a soulful departure for Dusty Springfield. Recorded at American Sound Studio under the direction of Jerry Wexler, Tom Dowd, and Arif Mardin, the sessions paired the British pop icon’s breathy vocals with the “Memphis Boys” house band. The result was a landmark fusion of pop and R&B that—while only peaking at #99 on the Billboard 200—has since achieved legendary status. Now a permanent fixture on “Greatest Albums of All Time” lists, Dusty in Memphis has been inducted into both the GRAMMYÒ Hall of Fame and the National Recording Registry.

Cher also tapped the Wexler-Dowd-Mardin production team in 1969 for 3614 Jackson Highway, her lone outing for Atco Records. The album takes its title from the street address of the Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where Cher recorded with the legendary “Swampers.” These sessions centered on her distinctive contralto with gritty, soulful interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, and Dr. John. Though the record flew under the radar at the time, today it’s regarded as one of the finest, most authentic vocal showcases of her career.

Joni Mitchell reached a creative and commercial high-water mark with 1974’s Court and Spark, an album that signaled her move from folk toward a sophisticated, jazz-inflected pop sound. Recorded with the jazz-fusion ensemble the L.A. Express, the record became the most successful of Mitchell’s career, peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200 and producing her highest-charting singles, “Help Me” (#7) and “Free Man In Paris” (#22). A critical juggernaut, the album earned three GRAMMYÒ nominations—including Album of the Year—and won for Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) for “Down To You.” Today, it remains a cornerstone of the 1970s singer-songwriter era.

Rhino High Fidelity continues to tap into Warner Music’s vast catalog, introducing reissues of seminal albums across genres—from rock and pop to jazz, soul, and beyond. Each title pairs uncompromising audio with archival-grade packaging, honoring the album’s original intent in both sound and design.

With the entire catalog at your disposal and we get this? The Analogue Productions of Dusty was great do folks really need an alternative?

$40 for a 33 is cheaper than $60 for a double 45… but then you can also get the mass market version for like $25-30 so i feel like a lot of people who’d spend $40 for a premium release instead of the standard $25 would probably be willing to jump up to $60 if they like an album enough to pay for the best copy they can get.

i don’t mind the dusty springfield reissue here as much as court and spark since we’ve already gotten a zillion audiophile, mostly cut from tape versions of that. joni made other albums too… but her other best albums have also already been reissued to death in the past 15-20 years anyway. we don’t need yet another set!

but i guess even MORE annoying than these is seeing how MFSL uses rhino high fidelity as market research cos they can’t license anything interesting or comparatively underserved from the warner catalog. we’re now getting a $60 mofi fun house 45 (which i predict will sound blown up and exaggerated and just awful), and a $125 marquee moon 45rpm one-step, both of those from DSD256. the mofi fun house will be the fourth audiophile reissue of that album in the 2020s alone. great record but the lack of interesting curation is getting absurd.

OTOH...if you believe that the MoFi version of Blue is the best ever (as I think MF does), and that Joni is one of the greatest of all time (as most do), then a MoFi Court and Spark should be of keen interest. Just as with the new Pet Sounds, we should be grateful for people pushing the envelope of what is possible, and $60 or $125 is a small price to pay for greatness

I've never heard the MoFi "Blue". Someone else must have said that, but now I'm curious!

Oops--exposed as an unreliable narrator--apologies all around. I think I have figured out my misunderstanding/conflation error. MF said the Blue in the Reprise box was the best he's heard. I bought it, loved it, then bought the MoFi and loved it even more. MF also said Hejira MoFi is the best you'll hear of that album. So let's say that all these things together leave my excited for Joni MoFi in general

Yeah curious about Fun House. Despite having a first Canadian press, an 80s Elektra press, the rhino hi fidelity reissue I ordered it anyway. Too curious not to. Though I could have waited for a review or two…
