Bob Ludwig's Led Zeppelin II Test Pressing Goes to Heritage Auction! bidding starts November 4th By: Michael FremerBy now everyone reading this knows the story of Bob Ludwig's first cut of Led Zeppelin II. Bob put everything on the tape in the grooves and Atlantic released it. The story goes a copy went to Ahmet Ertegun's niece and it wouldn't play on her kiddie phonograph. Fearing it wouldn't play on the average teenagers's turntable either, Atlantic issued a recall and it was re-cut by someone at Atlantic Studios with bass attenuated and dynamics... Read More

Wynn-ing: Dream Syndicate Founder Pens Memoir eviewing "I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True" by Steve Wynn By: JoE SilvaWith Freddie Freeman and the rest of the Dodgers having gutted the Yankees hopes of claiming their first World Series title in eons, it’s mildly tempting to think of a teenaged Steve Wynn, hooked on baseball and not bothering to get back to the guitar he abandoned in junior high.“Almost overnight, around the time I turned fourteen, my interest and focus and obsession shifted from music to sports…I was still a music fan. But following and eventually writing about... Read More

Wrensilva's "The Standard" Balances Form With Function An Up Close Sneak Peek of Wrensilva's Console Unit at An NYC Pop-Up at The Hotel Chelsea By: Evan TothGood design rests upon - and often wrestles with - the timeless ideals of form vs. function. It’s an age old debate that grapples between the way an item actually works against the way it looks. Architecture, automotive design, and - of course - the hifi industry all create products bragging fantastic looks, but do they always excel at doing the thing that they were designed to do?Once upon a time, during a period between newsprint and television - and way way before... Warsaw Audio Video Show 2024 Takeaway lots of records, little vinyl playback By: Michael FremerLast weekend's Warsaw Audio Video Show was a great success: well-attended by the industry and consumers alike. There was a lot to see, hear, and if you were there to shop for records, so much to buy at very reasonable prices. Big international brands displayed at the sports stadium, smaller Polish and other nationality brands unfamiliar to American audiophiles showed at the Radisson Sobieski Blue Hotel, while a few of the larger, more established brands were... Piano-Palooza Virtuosic performances on the keyboard from Maurizio Pollini and Friedrich Gulda By: Michael JohnsonThe music of Polish composer Frédéric Chopin (1810-1849) has, for most of my musical career, more or less eluded me. It may be because of his lack of non-piano output, or perhaps because his two piano concertos, while containing inspiring piano writing, didn’t really pass on that inspiration to the orchestral parts. I remember many rehearsals of boredom counting rests while listening to the brilliant melodic lines that Chopin gifted to the piano, but not us!My... Read More
Comments: 18In 2012, I had the opportunity to meet Jeff Wells, the talented designer and owner of Wells Audio. He walked into the audio store I was managing, carrying an amplifier under his arm, and asked if I would like to hear an amplifier surpassing anything I had in the store near its price point. Bold indeed! I immediately thought back to 1983 when John Iverson walked into our store with an Eagle 2 amplifier under his arm and made a similar proclamation. That day, John left... Read More

“Sheltering Skies” - The Long-Lost King Crimson Live Album 1980s show pressed on vinyl for the first time By: Dylan PegginSpiritual pursuits and work as a sideman in music circles primed guitarist Robert Fripp to form the group he envisioned in 1981 after laying King Crimson to rest in 1975. Along with drummer Bill Bruford, bassist Tony Levin, and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Adrian Belew, the quartet called themselves Discipline. The influence of new wave and post-punk made the group indicative of the time, bearing no resemblance to Crimson’s Mellotron swells and free improvisation.... Read More

darTZeel's Hervé Delétraz Responds to Rumors of the Company's Demise the future admittedly is dicey but the company soldiers on and those who know will continue to love the unique products By: Michael Fremer
darTZeel founder and brand creator Hervé Delétraz, responds here to a YouTube video posted by an equipment churner posing as a legit "audio reviewer" (whose understanding of journalistic ethics is null and void), based upon a rumor that Swiss specialty electronics manufacturer darTZeel has gone "out of business?" (the YouTuber added the question mark thinking it legitimized his pathetic rumor-mongering and makes hilarious his claim to be a "primary source" for audio information), spread by someone who really should know better since he is an industry veteran and his significant other is a publicist for a competing company has sparked a brouhaha second only to the ridiculous post on the Consequence of Sound website claiming "Vinyl Sales Plummet 33% in 2024", when of course 2024 is hardly over and the big Xmas season is ahead so how can he even suggest such a ridiculous headline, and the COS writer hasn't the professional chops to cite the source, which was a Billboard story that was also malignantly uninformed about Laminate's statistical modeling change that resulted in serious underreporting in the first half of 2024 and yes this is a run on sentence but so what, because as my source who knows what's really going on told me when I asked him before choosing to not publish a story based on the Bullboard story, when 2024's sales totals are calculated vinyl sales will be up by approximately 11%, which is very good considering how big the growth was in 2023 and yes I own darTZeel preamplifier and amplifiers and a phono pre-amp manufactured by the other company and the two companies, the individuals at both companies and their products work and play well together and now on with the show....
